Why a second term for Trump administration shouldn’t be an option.
KILDARE (JamesFaheyIre) – Within twenty minutes of taking the drug chloroquine in order to avoid getting sick from COVID-19, a wife and husband both in their sixties living in Arizona became “extremely ill.” Unfortunately, shortly after arriving at the hospital, the man died as a result of consuming the drug which he believed would protect him from the global virus. Sadly the couple equated cholorquine with the hydroxychloroquinen which is also found in anti malaria drugs.
Bizarrely though, even if the couple had taken the later which Trump has been so vocal about there is very little research to support its benefits as of today. The factors which make Trump so dangerous to not just his own population but the global population will be discussed.
The CIA has stated that hydroxychloroquine is dangerous – so potentially dangerous that side effects can include sudden death. One may ask why the President of the world’s most powerful nation is pushing it into the public domain with such little evidence?
Donald Trump does have a financial interest in the drug however small it may be. According to the New York Times “Mr. Trump himself has a small personal financial interest in Sanofi, the French drugmaker that makes Plaquenil, the brand-name version of hydroxychloroquine.” If the drug does gain momentum and become a saviour in the global fight against the virus no doubt it will be required all over the world. The drugs ability in fighting against the virus is yet to be proven but in Trump’s mind it could be a motivation for further down the line.
Trump works in ways which is very much business first. If Trump can push a drug with no evidence based research yet behind it, while at the same time calling climate change a hoax with almost complete scientific consensus on the human impact, why should he be trusted on anything as urgent as COVID19? The political economy of global pandemics is alive and well in the USA – but it is the people at the bottom of the social class who will suffer the most. Not the President and drug manufacturers.
Slow and Inconsistent
Trump has been inconsistent on the strength of the pandemic as well as the administration’s response being slow. On the 22nd of January 2020, Trump stated “It’s one person coming in from China, and we have it under control. It’s going to be just fine.” US senator from Connecticut Chris Murphy had meetings with the administration on February 5th and could sense the under-action being taken by the Trump Whitehouse. No emergency funding was made available for hospitals and other public institutions assisting people effected by the outbreak. Murphy tweeted – “Bottom line: they aren’t taking this seriously enough.”
At the end of February Trump continued his line of having the virus contained tweeting “The Coronavirus is very much under control in the USA. We are in contact with everyone and all relevant countries. CDC & World Health have been working hard and very smart. Stock Market starting to look very good to me!” He was more focused on the stock market, attacking political rivals as well as reporters and comparing his ratings to that of the swine flu in 2009/2010. This was after the the first American fatality happened on February 29th. Trump went further to divulge himself from all responsibility for the lag in testing made available to the public. He stated that there were circumstances, rules and regulations in place which the administration had to follow, ultimately delaying these tests.
However, it can be argued that this lag could have been avoided if the president had listened to experts and officials on the nature of pandemics. A study completed by the New York Times has highlighted that such experts as well as government officials warned the President of its nature much earlier in the year. It was reported that the officials in the administration stressed its severity back in January, 42 days before his Trump decided to develop a public policy to be followed to prevent the spread of the disease. Even in a pandemic Trump stuck to his guns and pursued his ill informed rhetoric based on inaction and ignorance. Should Trump have had listened to such expert opinion back in January it could have been life saving.
While many commentators, politicians and members of the public feel another Trump term in office would be catastrophic for the country there are some who feel he is on the end of undue criticism. Philip Bump who writes for the Washington Post has highlighted one aspect of this. Take, for example, the hydroxychloroquine financial interest theory. Bump argues that the President would only gain a minuscule fraction compared to his net worth as a whole.
Therefore the theory of promoting the drug in his press briefings are more to do with politics than they are financial interest. According to Bump “the use of the drug has become a benchmark in the political culture wars, with Trump allies echoing his calls for the drug as a sign of their confidence in his instincts and as a way of promoting what they see as an optimistic view of the pandemic. The president is probably also promoting the drug because it offers a big political upside — getting to say he was right and the experts were wrong — with a small downside.”
While the benefits of the using hydroxychloroquine are still being tested Democrat Karen Whitsett from Detroit went as far as thanking the president for suggesting the drug. “It has a lot to do with the president… bringing it up. He is the only person who has the power to make it a priority.” When questioned whether Trump saved her life, Whitsett later stated “Yes, I do,” and “I do thank him for that.”
A Danger to Mass Populations
With an election looking there is no doubt no matter what the outcome of the pandemic is, regardless of the number of deaths or the impact on the economy Trump praise himself and his administration for the way the behaved. History has shown Presidents use war or major issues to rally national support and gain followers who are on the fence before deciding which way to vote. COVID19 is currently Trumps war and he will utilise it to get back into office if he can. This must be avoided at all costs.
While the example of Karen Whitsett was somewhat positive it is only one case. This should not be enough to public state its benefits like Trump has done without scientific backing. Whitsett stated Trump saved her life but its important to note that it was prescribed along with a number of drugs so it is difficult to claim it was entirely down to hydroxychloroquine. Additionally age factors and underlying health conditions are very important in the outcome of cases.
Trump needs to wait until testing concludes and along with doctors and experts advise on which drugs are safe and unsafe. This may prove to be difficult for Trump as he spent much of his career promoting his company and this type of presentation comes naturally to him as a salesman. Otherwise he is risking the well being of the people whom he serves. Trump failed in this aspect already and with the urgency of the pandemic it is clear he is not fit for a second term in office.
Expert Opinion is Essential to avoid Catastrophe
It is evident that Trump has been slow and inconsistent on the pandemic which has swept through America and the world in recent months. Over 23,000 lives have been lost under his administration and will likely tarnish his presidency.
Trump has instructed his administration to pull funding from the World Health Organisation which could have serious issues for the people who desperately need its programmes and supports. Threatening retaliation against India if it did not supply hydroxychloroquine to the US highlights the mans character. He continues to attack reporters who ask genuine questions in the wake of such a pandemic. According to CNN “Trump refuses to acknowledge any mistakes”; “Trump uses task force briefing to try and rewrite history on coronavirus response”; “Trump melts down in angry response to reports he ignored virus warnings”; “Angry Trump turns briefing into propaganda session.” These questions – however much the Presidents dislikes, should be asked, whether there is a democratic president or a republican president.
Additionally, in a pandemic expert opinion is what is needed more than ever – not political or financial interest of the elite or pushing drugs with no proven ability. We are still waiting to learn the benefits of hydrochloroquine but it is extremely dangerous to promote something which we simply do not know its implications.
After losing her partner in Arizona and lucky to be alive, the man’s wife who tragically passed from taking chloroquine said “Don’t take anything. Don’t believe anything. Don’t believe anything that the president says and his people … call your doctor.”
