Fairtrade Carlow Chairperson Bernadette Power speaks to transition year students in Presentation College, Carlow.

On the 21st of October Chairperson of Fairtrade Carlow, Bernadette Power, gave a talk to transition year students in Presentation College, Carlow. The talk was related to part of their volunteering project which the school are running with the transition year students.

For those of you not aware of what Fairtrade is, it can be defined as… “an alternative approach to conventional trade and is based on a partnership between some of the most disadvantaged farmers and workers in the developing world and the people who buy their products.” Interestingly, in 1988, the first Fairtrade label was launched by Max Havelaar, under the initiative of the Dutch development agency Solidaridad. The first Fairtrade coffee from Mexico was sold into Dutch supermarkets. It was branded Max Havelaar, after a fictional Dutch character who opposed the exploitation of coffee pickers in Dutch colonies.1

The talk was a very positive experience according to Bernadette where some questions raised from students included – what was it like to be a Fairtrade volunteer and how students could get involved to promote Fairtrade within their family, school, community.

Such talks and activities are a great way to engage people from an early age about Fairtrade and what the implications of buying Fairtrade products can be. Additionally, it can encourage the youth of Carlow to become more local and Global citizens on topics such as Fairtrade, Climate Change and other Global Issues in current affairs.

There are many organisations in Carlow who are already dedicated to purchasing produce coming from Fairtrade farmers and producers. If you are interested in becoming involved with Fairtrade in the Carlow community please do not hesitate to contact Bernadette – Phone: 087 903 1791.
